Biography

The Betty Airs hot-tub is reaching boiling point!

Headed by ex-Gerling and The E.L.F. savant Darren Cross, Betty Airs formed in late 2010 with Darren on guitar and vocals, Cristian Campano (vocals) and Michael Zagoridis (drums/vocals) in a club that even Groucho Marx wouldn’t want to exit.

It’s now 2011 and Patrick Matthews (ex-Vines/Youth Group) has finally coughed up his membership fees and been given access to the sandpit. An exclusive members-only fun zone of raw pop that fuses Cross’ trademark irreverent, and at the same time reverential, love of indie rock with a newfound burst of fun, and a nod and wink to the halcyon days of yore.

“My ex-ex-girlfriend used to read the news on one of the radio stations in Sydney and after we broke up, I never wanted to listen to it,” Darren reflects. “So I started to listen to this radio station that played all this fantastic ‘50s music that I’d kind of heard when I was a kid. That really influenced my whole outlook on playing guitar again.”

The sound of Betty Airs has as much to do with Chuck Berry chanting “Hail! Hail! Rock & Roll!” and the perfect pop of The Brill Building, as it does with the spirit of Joe Strummer breaking down barriers and screaming “White Riot – I wanna riot. I wanna riot of my own!”

Clever, fun and heartfelt, Betty Airs will convince you that it’s okay to steal your dad’s car, smash it into a wall, and the next morning tell him that you thought you heard strange noises from the garage through the night.

With a heartfelt DIY ethic at its core, Betty Airs released their debut 7” ‘Reverse Now’, to anyone that was willing to take notice. Since then their output has been solely online. “I’ve always been really involved with the online thing. Two or three years ago I sent an email to Youtube about a video I’d made and they made it the video of the day. It got a quarter of a million hits and it cost me 10 bucks to make.”

Fast forward to early 2011…their debut EP ‘Creepin’ It Real’, produced by Darren in a hockey shed in Glebe, included live favourites Jennifer’s Enemy, Standing/Waiting and Reverse Now and was made available free online before the tracks were bundled with the lost classic She’s The Juan  and exclusively released via the Betty Airs BandCamp page. Unearth the damned thing! Find it! Dig it up High Fidelity-like and remember why rock & roll is king!

With chaotic performances that have been known to inspire spontaneous, explosive conga-line frenzy, Betty Airs are truly psyched and looking forward to the future…where Darren will, we’re sure, get the last word, and just as importantly the last laugh!
